Community Based HIV/AIDS Care and Support Project

Hope of Life

I am Divyabarathi (name has changed) (13 years old) residing at Valaseripatti of Kottampatti Block. I am studying 7th standard Kottampatti Government Girls Hr. Sec. School. My mother died three years back by HIV/AIDS. My father and myself also infected. I am studying well. But my father is looking after me and my elder sister and my younger brother as being a coolie. My siblings are not infected. I am forced to have medicines regularly and I don’t like to have medicines. Previously I had frequent fevers, head aches and other diseases. After talking with Vijaya akka from support group brought me to PACHE Trust. A staff and Vijaya akka brought me to Madurai GH for testing. We found that I have less than 200 CD4 counts and I was counseled to have ART. There after I am regular in ART and now I am feeling better without the diseases. In the beginning I was isolated by my neighbours as myself, father and my mother were infected. The staff from PACHE Trust have interacted with them for their care and support for our welfare. Now they are very concern and caring with us especially the self help group members. PACHE Trust has enabled us with AHN and CWOs to have regular medical and nutrition support. Now I have the confidence that I will become a teacher to my own school. I thank PACHE Trust for given me such confidence and support and I pray that more children like me must be benefited these care and support.

My Ambition

I am R. Bhuvaneswari (name has changed) (age 9), residing at kadumittanpatti.  I am studying in 4th standard at Panchayat Union School.  Two years back, my father died by HIV/AIDS.  My self and My mother have affected with HIV.  I have an elder brother and a sister.  No one help from my father’s relatives.  So we left our own village of Saruguvalayapatti and came to grandma’s village Kadumittanpatti.

Because of old age, my grandma can’t give full support to us.  So we are living in a very poor condition among the mango farm.  No other help from others.

At that situations, a staff from PACHE Trust and consoled us.  My mother feels free from mental stress.  The staff asked our relatives to give support to us.  My mother and myself attended quarterly follow up meeting at Melur project office.  The parents and children shared the feelings of their families and also about the previous meetings.  At that time, I was unable to share my feelings.  PACHE Team encouraged me to speak.  It gives more confidence to share my feelings in the next meetings.

The children shared the activities of support group.  I liked the activities of the support meetings.  So I wish to join with the support group.  The children told about their future ambitions.  I also share my future ambitions among them with full confidence.  I want to become a teacher.I thank PACHE Trust staff for giving me confidence in my life.  I shall support the children those who are affected by HIV like me and pray for them.

My name is Maya (name has changed). I am studying in VII Std. I have a younger brother. He is studying VI Std. We are studying well. And my parent was died in AIDS/HIV in our infancy, ignorance stage.  My brother was also infected by AIDS/HIV and taking ART medicine. We are in the care of our aunty (Periyamma).  She is widow, and she working as a agriculture coolie .They getting very low income, economically we are struggling very much.

My brother will not take his food properly. He won’t obey to anyone. He doesn’t go to school regularly, and he used to make quarrel with the local guys. One day, they beat my brother and there is no one to support him. In the mean time, my aunty also fell down in her working place and had a heavy injury in her legs. My brother’s activity disturbed us both mentally and physically.

In this situation CHAHA team staffs Mrs.Pandiyammal and Counselor – Mr.Raja visited our house for need assessment.  I explained them about our family situation and my brother’s activities.  They gave counseling to my brother and then he realized our future.  They asked us to make an ambition in our life my brother aim to become collector and my self to become a teacher.

Now we are getting lot of support from CHAHA project like house hold, education, nutrition, OI and counseling.

Now my brother is going to school regularly. I got the new brother, in future we both will come in good position. I never forget the CHAHA project. We got confidence in our life, because of them. Thanks to CHAHA project staffs

Mahalir Thittam – Case Studies

The Before and After

My name is Lakshmi and I am living at Mullipallam Village, Vadipatti Taluk, in Madurai District.  I joined in a SHG (Self Help Group) which started by PACHE Trust during the year 1996.

Before I joined in the group, I didn’t know anything about the external world.  I am lived under the male domination and I thought that it was the fate of women in the world especially in India.  After repeated interventions by the PACHE Trust project team I came forward to join at the SHG as a Member.  During that time, I don’t have any saving and a bank account.  Even I am very shy to communicate with others and I am very hesitated to go out of my house.  I worked as a Coolie (daily labourer) and I managed the family within my earnings and I am fully dependent on males for all other activities at the home and outside.

Whenever a meeting was conducted at the village, the male only can able to participate at the meetings.  Women are not participated during the meetings.  We didn’t know anything about village meetings and Grama Saba.  In politics also, the men folk only can participate at the village level.  I have some difficulties in hearing, I can manage without using the hearing aid because of my shyness and culture.  It created me an inhibition to my contacts with the external world.  I thought as an ordinary women living in a kitchen is the life of mine.  But the changes have happened when I joined a member at the SHG.

After I joined in SHG, saving habit has started in my family.  And I also have a bank account near my village nationalized bank.  It makes me very proud and confident.  I had a loan from the SHG and I bought a COW and I started selling milk to the society.  Again I got a loan from the bank and I bought another COW and it improved my financial position after regular payment of the loan.  I relieved from the inferiority complex and I provided good education and nutrition to my children.  It gave me satisfaction and social status at the society.

The reinforcement of the information which provided during the Mahalir Thittam meetings and trainings programme has improved my leadership qualities and the group members requested me to contest the local body election at the village panchayat.  With the support of Self Help Groups and the public, I became the village panchayat President at the first time.  Now as a President for the village panchayat, I am discharging my duties towards the development of women, children and rural development activities.  I am very proud to say after I joined in the group only I came to know to put my signature without any spelling mistake.

I am very thankful for Mahalir Thittam, PACHE Trust and fellow women for this remarkable changes in my life and I am assured, I will disseminate the same to others towards women emancipation and empowerment.
