Primary Target : Out of School Adolescents in Madurai

The Young People’s Community Peer Education Programme sponsored by UNICEF was taken up to spread the HIV related awareness among the adolescent boys and girls in the city. Having reached a large part of the target community, the project is one of the most demanded among the parents of young people.

Goals :

To provide HIV/ AIDS knowledge and enhance the perception of risk of HIV/AIDS among out-of-schools young people in Madurai District and empower them with life skills to cope with risky situations.

Objectives 

  • To impart knowledge to young people in Madurai District on STD/ HIV/ AIDS and its prevention and to educate them about their risk of HIV infection.
  • To address issues related to growing up and changing human anatomy.
  • To motivate the young people to abstain from peer pressure and other unhealthy practices.
  • Ultimately, to safeguard the young people from infection of STD/ HIV/ AIDS.
  • To identify young people in Madurai District who are capable of effective interpersonal communication with their peers on issues related to adolescence, life skills, HIV/AIDS prevention and to involve them in the project as peer educators.
  • To sensitize parents on the needs and problems of  adolescents
